The 3rd Symposium on Digital Earth
Czech Republic, BRNO, September 21-25, 2003

Dear colleagues, dear contemporary and future friends and supporters of the idea of Digital Earth, dear friends from the GI fields, activities in ICA, global spatial data oriented projects, Information Society Forum EU, Global Society Dialogue, U.N. activities, and other fields,

Let me wish you only the best in the coming year 2003 both in your personal life and professional life. In the latter, I would like to play an important role and organize the 3rd Symposium on Digital Earth which will be held in the second largest city of the Czech Republic, BRNO, on September 21-25, 2003. Brno is located between Prague and Vienna and is famous - apart from many other things - as the city of the musical composer Leos Janacek.

The traditions of Brno include also GI oriented conferences. Me and my work team have already realized six international conferences - from Euro Carto VI in 1987 to AGILE one in 2001. The task of the coming 3rd symposium on Digital Earth is to accelerate its development, to compare state of the art in different continents and countries and on the global scale. The core of the symposium will be traditionally aimed at geographic information fields, but more than before we would like to open doors towards other processes in the Information Society and show possible role of the GI. A very important role will be played by the idea of sustainable development in all its aspects: ecological, economical, technological, cultural, social, and ethical.

By this letter I would like to invite you to participate in our event which is supported not only by the International Society on Digital Earth and Masaryk University in Brno but as well by ministries of the Czech government, the European Commission, international organizations and initiatives (ICA, FAO, ISO, Open GIS, Global Society Dialogue) and is prepared in close co-operation with other global spatial data oriented projects, such as Global Map, GSDI, GISD and activities of the Cartographic Unit of the U.N. A very important task of the symposium will be discussion about possible Global Sustainable Information Society.

You will find more information on our Web page: http://digitalearth03.geogr.muni.cz

Please be so kind and inform also your organizations, companies, potential participants of the event and technical exhibition about our symposium. Please do not forget to send to us abstracts of your papers soon.
