The Institute of General and Experimental Biology SВ RAS was established in 1981 on the base of the Biology Department of the Buryat Branch of the SВ RAS. Eduard Leonardovich Klimashevsky, D. Sc. (Biology), corresponding member of the All-Union Academy of Agricultural Sciences Named after V.I. Lenin, was appointed the first director of the Institute.

Main researches: structure, functioning and evolution of biological diversity of terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems, problems of biological resources conservation and management.
